El Plan for Hispanic/Latine Ministry

of the United Methodist Church

Who we are

We are conversation and strategic development partners. We are facilitators and capacity builders. We are consultants. We exist to journey with annual conferences in a spirit of acompañamiento to increase capacity and develop leaders who are prepared and ready to build the beloved community.

We are committed people who work to create more opportunities for Hispanic/Latines to genuinely access a pathway to sit at the table as agents of transformation in society in the full establishment of God’s Kingdom.

We are one of the United Methodist Church's six ethnic ministry plans that serve as a programmatic arm of the church. Since 1992, El Plan has been the strategy for Hispanic/Latine ministry in the United Methodist Church. For over 30 years, we have been walking alongside annual conferences, increasing the capacity of our clergy and laity, and advocating on behalf of the rich diversity of our growing Hispanic/Latino community throughout our connection.

Although El Plan is an independent programmatic arm of the Church we are housed for administrative purposes under the General Commission on Religion and Race. GCORR is our partner in ministry.

The Plan has been providing acompañamiento to annual conferences since 1992, as they strategize and respond to the call of God in and with Hispanic/Latino communities.

Our Mission

As we advance, Leadership Formation continues to be the heart of mission. The Hispanic/Latino Ministry Plan has learned to reconstruct the formation of leadership in a radically new way that requires not only superficial changes but rather adopting structural changes.

Our mandate from the general conference is to provide acompañamiento to annual conferences as they develop strategies that are contextual and relevant to their needs. We are committed to developing and equipping clergy and laity as they work in their communities to SEE, DISCERN, and COLLABORATE in the development of transformational ministries.

During General Conference of 1992, The United Methodist Church faithfully birthed one of the six ethnic national plans as part of God’s scandalous and enigmatic actions to reaffirm the inclusion of people from diverse cultural identities, family traditions, socioeconomic status, sexual identity, and political affiliations.

Our story is not only a confirmation that God is “making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19 NIV) but also a road map to continue that discerning, unrestricted, and all-inclusive vision as we move on to the third decade of the twenty-first century.
